Architects for Peace Film screening: Estate, a Reverie
What comes to mind when you think of a public housing estate? Have you ever visited one? Have you been inside? Have you spoken to a resident?
Filmed over seven years, Estate, a Reverie gives a voice to the residents of Haggerston Estate in the lead up to its demolition. There are stories of happiness, community, loneliness, love, hardship and laughter. The film captures a moment of imminent transition, and brings a very human side to the impacts of social housing regeneration.
This film made us question our own perceptions, privilege and personal ideals of ‘home’. It made us think about the smaller things, the things we often forget in the day-to-day of projects, plans and policies.
Currently in Melbourne, nine public housing sites are being redeveloped. How can we ensure these sites will be places of diversity and community in the future?
On the night of the film screening we will host a walk and conversation during which participants can reflect on the very urgent matters of regeneration and gentrification. What are the opportunities? What are the consequences?
