Creativity, design and social change with Grace McQuilten, The Social Studio - 7pm, Thursday 25 October 2012
Design
contains an inherent paradox: it involves a mixture of order and chaos,
creativity and control. There is complexity in the journey from "plan"
through "process" to finished "product", and a degree of uncertainty and
risk in the translation of an original idea into the end result. This
complexity, rather than being
counter-productive, actually provides the ground for true innovation. It
is the problematic, complex and unpredictable aspects of design that
lend themselves most to social change and innovation. Come along to hear
Grace unwrap these ideas with reference to her work at The Social
Studio over the
last three years.
Grace McQuilten is the CEO of The Social Studio, a social enterprise that works to create education and employment opportunities for refugee youth through fashion design, clothing production, retail and hospitality. Grace is also a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, where she is working on a project that examines the relationship between design and social change. Grace has been working in the areas of community development and social enterprise for the last seven years.
